We speak to Ward 18 councillor, Fazel Jaffer

“I want to embark on an environmental education and awareness campaign," Councillor Fazel Jaffer.

Ward 18 councillor, Fazel Jaffer said that both councillors have set goals for this year.

“The first goal is to really get the stakeholders forum going in Eldorado Park. We want to pull all local organisations and businesses together under one umbrella. The goal is to create synergy amongst all stakeholders so that we are all on the same page when it comes to bettering our community.

“Everyone wants to be a community leader these days and they have been pulling us in different directions therefore
the goal is to unite so we can solve issues as a collective, so no one feels left out,” said Jaffer.

The councillor said that one of the key stakeholders he wants to focus on is the Senior Citizens’ Forum.

“We also want to start a youth forum that will actively assist our youth and their needs. An economic forum has been on the agenda for a while now, here we will focus on educating residents about what it means to run a small business.

“We also want to teach our people that working with the government is not necessarily the only way they can make money. We want to educate our people on how they can do business in the private sector as well as among themselves. Illegal dumping in the area is a matter of serious concern,” said Jaffer.

“I want to embark on an environmental education and awareness campaign. Here I plan to get all environmental stakeholders together to assist me in eradicating illegal dumping once and for all because, whether we like it or not, the dumping problem poses health risks to all of us,” said Jaffer.

“I am aware that many people do not take out the black Pikitup bins because they fear it will be stolen, so that
is an issue we have to address as well.

“Our foreign-owned house shops do not have bins which is yet another issue that needs to be addressed. We need to find out why people are dumping and try to fix that first. The Lapland issue needs to be addressed,” he continued.

“Last year, I took three MMCs with me for a site visit to assess what is happening there and what it is doing to the residents living there.

“Our challenge is that the Human Rights Commission, as well as the Lesotho Embassy, is blocking us from evicting those people, they call themselves the re-claimers because most of them are Lesotho nationals.

“The long-term plan is to find another place for them to live but for now, I want to at the very least clean the area,” said Jaffer.
