Efforts to reduce carnage on South African roads beefed up

With the programme in place, there is hope that there will be fewer accidents on the roads.

Over the festive season there were a number of road fatalities and accidents on our roads. To ‘beef up’ on road safety, Gauteng Premier, David Makhura and MEC for Community Safety, Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane hosted a passing out parade for 90 trainee traffic officers who were recruited through a vigorous selection process and successfully completed the training programme on January 25.

With the programme in place, there is hope that there will be fewer accidents on the roads. Communications officer for ER24, Russel Meiring released a report on an accident which happened in Florida on January 23. According to the communications officer, ten people were left injured, this included three children.

The report stated that a taxi and a light motor vehicle collided at Goldman and Sauer Road intersection in Florida. Meiring said that the ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene at 7.42 am to find that the Provincial Services were already there attending to those whose were involved in the accident.

“A taxi and light motor vehicle were found still in the road, facing oncoming traffic. The occupants had already climbed out of the vehicle and were found on the side of the road.”

“Paramedics assessed the patients and found that ten people, including three young children, had sustained minor to moderate injuries. Fortunately, no serious injuries or fatalities were found,” said Meiring.

The reported said that the patients were treated and thereafter transported to various hospitals for further treatment. Local authorities were on the scene for further investigations.
