Stationery drive keeps pupils moving forward

Education is the key to freeing communities from poverty. For many households, the beginning of the 2019 academic year was exciting but for others, it meant going back or starting a new school without the basic necessities, like stationery.

Well-known anti-drug activist and Yellow Ribbon Foundation (YRF), Dereleen James, with the help of Local Drug Action Committee chairperson and Come Back Mission founder, Cheryl Pillay, started a stationery drive in hopes that the children in Eldorado Park will start the year off with everything they need.

James said, “There are many households who don’t share the same ‘back to school’ excitement because they are genuinely unable to provide for their children, poverty in our community is a real thing.”

“Close to 300 children in both primary and high schools in the area have been identified, although there is no cut-off date because there is always a need for school supplies, ideally we would like to provide them with stationery packs by the end of this month,” she added.

James also said that as a result of the dire need, they have already made a few ad-hoc deliveries to qualifying households.

She said, “We will be dropping off packs at schools where disadvantaged learners have been identified by educators. This way we don’t assist children whose parents are able to provide. We will also have an open-air handover to other children in need. The date for the handover depends on the volume of stationery the community donates,” she said.

The stationery needed includes A4 and A5 hardcover books, A4 and A5 soft cover books, pens, pencils, rulers, flip files, scissors, Pritt glue sticks, sharpeners, Sellotape, photocopy paper, erasers, school bags which are in a good condition, mathematical sets, calculators and scientific calculators.
