6 distinctions for Protea Glen boy and a 94% pass rate for BGCSA
The overall BGCSA matric class of 2018 obtained a 94% pass rate, with many achieving a Bachelor’s pass, and some already having obtained bursaries for further studies.
Charles Pholoana from the Boys & Girls Club of Protea Glen outdid himself on his matric results when he achieved 6 distinctions in Business Studies, Mathematics Literacy, and Life Orientation to name a few. Raised by supportive grandparents, and the eldest of 3 siblings, Pholoana has always risen above his circumstances.
“The Club has played such a crucial role in my life. The facilitators always encouraged me to be the best version of myself and ensured I did my homework on a daily.
“Programs like Career Launch and Passport to Manhood helped in guiding my decision to study Law and shape my character as a young person.”

Pholoana said. When asked about he felt about his university acceptance, he added: “I feel excited and overwhelmed by what lies ahead.”
His grandmother, Fikile Mabaso, shared her pride in him by adding: “I’m really proud of Charles. He has always been a determined young man, who’s responsible and focused. I’m so thankful to the Club because I can see the positive effect it’s had on his life. I’m also grateful to his teachers.”
In 2017, Pholoana was nominated Youth of the Year because of his exemplary behaviour among his peers as well as his participation and service around the Club.

Youth of the Year is an award given to the best BGCSA members in different clubs throughout Gauteng every year with stringent selection procedures.
Another matriculant, Mpumi Phetoe, from the Boys & Girls Club of Pimville, obtained 3 distinctions in IsiZulu, English, and Life Orientation.
“I’m so excited about my results and I look forward to following my dreams. To me this is more than a pass, it always shows my peers and the community that there is always hope.”
