Passing matric requires discipline

Hard work ahead for matriculants.

For Mohau Mofokeng (18), her matric year proved to be the most testing of her entire school career, she realised early on that she needed to take a disciplined approach to her studies if she were to pass.

The biggest highlight of the year for the 18-year-old was seeing her name in the newspaper, even though she was a little disappointed because she hoped to achieve more.

Mofokeng shared with us how she had to put extra effort into her studies because a few of the subjects, especially accounting, proved to be a major headache. Her Grade 11 mark in the subject was 54% which left her unsettled but she vowed to do better in matric.

She also believes that teaching should be fun and that learners have to enjoy each subject, which she feels would help many learners to pass.

“Attending Saturday classes has helped me improve my marks and I also obtained a distinction in accounting which was a subject I found very challenging.

“After approaching Black Child Tutoring (BCT) for help with my studies, I was pleasantly surprised to see an improvement in my marks and I also enjoyed their study methods,” said Mofokeng.

The recent matric graduate said that she will remain disciplined and apply the study techniques which is taught at BCT, ranging from mind maps and different colour highlighters to memorise key aspects easier.

She added, “When you reach matric, make sure you choose friends wisely. Have an open mind and never be negative in any subject, use your time wisely and draw up a study table to manage your time better.”
