Seniors become sitting ducks for scumbag criminals

The seniors also made it known that there are many residents in the village who have their grandchildren or children living there on the premises.

A group of senior citizens from Riverlea Retirement Village speaks out about the high crime rate in their village. Dulcie Adams explained: “On January 4 they took my LNB off the dish so I spent the whole weekend without a working TV.

On January 7, I replaced my LNB and a guy tried to cut it off again. I saw him and I rattled the burglar and screamed for my neighbours and then he ran and jumped the wall. The police were here but they didn’t take any statements.”

According to the website: www.dstv.com, “All Dstv satellite installations make use of an LNB (low-noise block downconverter). The LNB is the receiving “arm” that you see mounted on your satellite dish. It collects radio waves from the dish and converts these into a signal which your decoder can understand.”

Adams said that she had to pay R450 to have the LNB replaced. Adams explained that the suspect had a bucket to stand on, a rod, his other tools and he was wearing a red coat.

A few of the ladies claimed that the security guard was asleep during the attempted robbery and that he had to be woken up by residents. There have been 6 LNB devices that have been stolen in a space of 4 days.

“They stole ours last night and we don’t have money, our children don’t support us, we have to survive on our pension. We try to make ourselves comfortable and then other people who are drug addicts and alcoholics come and take from us, they take what we sacrificed for,” said Lynn Solomons.

The seniors also made it known that there are many residents in the village who have their grandchildren or children living there on the premises and this is an issue because as the residents explained that the friends which are brought into the village are suspicious characters.

Susan Pretorius added: “the thing is that they know that we sleep early here at the village and that’s why they come to rob us after 12 am.”

Lynn Solomons points at her DSTV dish that is missing the LNB with neighbours: Norleen Petersen, Gail Martin, Gyroenisha Stewert, Theresa Lyrus, Dulcie Adams, and Susan Pretorius.

Gyroenisha Stewert explained that she asked for a transfer to another village because of all the break in’s that happen there.

“In the past year, they broke into my place 5 times. I cannot handle it anymore because it puts a fear in me, and if we hear a voice outside our unit, we cannot just go out because it’s dangerous,” she added.

Pretorius shared that last month her unit was broken into while she was asleep when she woke up the intruder was watching her sleep. He then pushed himself through the burglar bars and ran.

The residents said that they are living in fear and as time goes on, they continue to use money which they actually need for groceries, on adding more burglar bars, motion sensed lights or just replacing what was stolen.
