LISTEN: Prof Mpho’s new breakout single titled Maps Maponyane

No trade between music and your career.

Our local music industry is growing in leaps and bounds judging by the abundance of talented artists in our communities. So it is quite hard to actually stand out and become successful in the industry.

Aspiring Freedom Park entertainer Sebetle Mogoshane, who goes by the stage name, ‘Prof Mpho’ said, “Everything is rooted in your hard work and dedication.”

Sebetle Mogoshane is his birth name, although he was named ‘Mpho’ (Gift) by his grandmother who he said is someone he holds very dear to his heart. Prof Mpho is also a financial market practitioner or trader as most people would call it, and that is how his stage name was conceived.

According to Mogoshane, he has always wanted to pursue a career in music and looked at it from a distance but took a bold and conscious decision to start focusing on his music career last year.

When weighing a career in music versus a lucrative one in the finance sector, his choice could leave you baffled, but he believes in following your passion.

He said, “The thing is when you follow your passion, you redefine yourself and I am all about expressing myself in a way which is entertaining and therapeutic.”

Mogoshane’s new breakout single titled Maps Maponyane suggests that his current sound is a fusion of hip hop and kwaito and is inspired by his respect and admiration for a local celebrity, Maps Maponyane.
To stay relevant, Prof Mpho intends creating his own identity and carving his signature sound on the local music scene.

“I’m literally a touch of everything I wanted to be, from the dress code to how I am. When you become an imitation, you lack originality,” he said.

Mogoshane also emphasised the need for South Africansto be more patriotic and what better way to start than by listening to more home-brewed music because there tends to be a lot of influence from artists overseas. He believes South Africans should tell their own stories to the world.

He said, “We all come from places where we need to share where we’re coming from. Why not let the narrative come from places like Devland, Freedom Park or Eldorado Park?”

This year we can expect more music from the Freedom Park artist who will be approaching record companies for a deal.

He added that he would be happy any recording company would approach him as well. Part of his plans this year includes delving into acting and dabbling with television presenting as well.

While still continuing his profession as a trader, he added, “All these facets of my life will always be a part of me. I could never separate music from trading or trading from music.”
