‘Hit the books, not the streets’

"Extra classes are very helpful and they do assist children and let us emphasise the importance of education and my wish is that parents play the role in supporting their children," he said.

Mcebisi Sibiya is a former learner from Bhukulani Secondary School who obtained five distinctions during the 2018 matric exam.

He attributes this astounding success to remaining focused and dedicated to his studies. Chief of these was maintaining attendance at the Saturday classes which are offered at the school in Meadowlands.

When asked to pass on a few handy tips which this year’s crop of matriculants could follow, he said, “What I did most was use past question papers so that I could familiarise myself with how the questions are structured and it also helped to sharpen my abilities.”

“One thing that I learnt is that if you do not study from the first day, the work pile up and the pressure increases, which results in one not being able to cope.”

His peers are unanimous in their opinion that Sibiya has always been a self-driven individual and they marveled at his love for reading.

Sibiya added, “Because we are all different, what might have worked for me during the year may not work for the next person, so try different study methods.”

His family has been supportive of him since he started matric and he credits that with imbuing him with the discipline remain dedicated and focused on his studies.

“On Saturdays, I would attend extra classes at Inkonjane Primary School. It was here that I met Sabelo Zungu who showed me that it was possible to pass matric and I also saw an improvement in my marks.”

“I urge every parent or family member to support their children even it means going the extra mile in making sure that you encourage their education.”

“Extra classes are very helpful and they do assist children and let us emphasise the importance of education and my wish is that parents play the role in supporting their children,” he said.

Sibiya said it was possible for Soweto schools to achieve a 100% pass mark because of the healthy competition between the schools.
