Another 100% matric pass rate for Saint Barnabas College

Saint Barnabas College has had a 100% matric pass rate for the last two years.

Saint Barnabas College has had a 100% matric pass rate for the last two years, we interviewed Principal Heather Carolus and acting deputy principal Boikanyo Molefe to find out how they do it.

The total amount of Grade 12 learners were 73 and from this group; 58 learners had distinctions, 4% passed with a Higher Certificate, 18% with an admission to a Diploma and 78% with an admission to a Bachelor’s Degree.

Molefe: “We follow a normal timetable during the day then we have morning and afternoon classes as well on some days. We also have a Blitz Week that we have just before prelims for the Grade 12 learners, we book them into the hostels so that they can have a programme after school from 3.30pm to 10 pm with another programme.”

When asked was the Blitz Week part of the secret to the schools 100% pass rate, Molefe said that he would say that the Blitz Week is part of the secret.

Carolus added: “I think its part of the hard work, we have teachers that are here, we do not have a high absentee rate with both our teachers are learners. I think that there’s motivation which helps them too.

“There’s a good amount of parent involvement but not as many as we would like so we have to work out a strategy to get more parents involved. We also have a good School Governing Body (SGB), it’s these little things that count to the high pass rates, I don’t think we can say we have one thing that is our secret.”

Molefe said: “I attended school here back then when it was still a private school and when we became a government school, the culture of the school never changed. With the school having such high results for me is more meaningful and me being part of it just makes my job here more worth it.”

Carolus said that even if they had 100% in each subject she will still not be satisfied because they like raising the bar higher.

“The challenge of how can we do better motivates us to do more. What must be noted that most of these children are not privileged children, they do get tested when they come to the school, however, they are sitting with a lot of contextual problems that children in other schools have to deal with.

“People sometimes think that the children here are rich but it’s not true, the children here don’t always have a better background than others.”

The acting deputy said that it is not only the teachers contributing to the learning environment but the ground staff too, the environment just feels safe and it’s an environment that makes our learners want to do well.

Top 10 learners in the school are: Justine Kester (86%), Insaaf Moosa (84%), Erin van Staden (83%), Larique Ryan (82%), Kimahl Farred (75%), Zahraa Sallie (71,4%), Brandon Sevell (71,1%), Mohammed Gathoo (71%), Caitlin Wentzel (70.8%) and Mushfika Albertyn (70,6%).
