LISTEN: Protea Glen SAPS rollout new intervention against drug abuse

Police have added a new tier in their intervention strategies against drug abuse.

Protea Glen SAPS held a drug, crime and prostitution awareness campaign in the Protea South community this morning (January 11).

The awareness campaign saw the rolling out of the SAPS’ newly introduced divine intervention approach which is described by the spokesperson, Sergeant Vincent Mashiteng, as an intervention involving the church and pastors.

Pastors preached and prayed for the drug addicts found in the street infamously known as ‘nyaope street’ in Protea South with the hope of touching at least one of them and encouraging them to get off the streets and fill up the churches.

Mashiteng noted that this was only the beginning of the intervention and that the police force hoped to intensify their efforts in the fight against drugs.

One of the drug addicts who wish to remain unnamed says he wants to go to the South African National  Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (SANCA) but is discouraged by the procedures.

This, arguably, shows a need to involve addicts when drafting policies regarding the fight against drugs. The SAPS is set to hold another divine intervention awareness campaign in the area soon on a much larger scale.

Pastor Mercy Kapoko prays the spirit of addiction out of an admitted drug addict’s life as part of the police’s new divine intervention strategy.

Pastor Peter Phahlane spoke words of motivation to those found gathered on ‘nyaope street’ in Protea South.
