Claremont academy offers kickboxing and boxing lessons

Newville Sports Academy has been offering boxing and kickboxing lessons to the community of Claremont for more than 8 Years. Shorne Moorcroft who is a former kickboxing champion is the head coach of the academy. Moorcroft started boxing in the 1970s and the took off 15 years so that he could focus on becoming the Kickboxing champion.

“We got twenty-five boxers and kickboxers and then we have about nine to fifteen ladies who come for fitness training. When it comes to tournaments, we are very busy.”

“Our calendar is always full for the year. We have two kickboxing and boxing tournaments here at Danie van Zyl a year. Next year the tournaments will be held on March 23 and October 26,” said Moorcroft.



Training is Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Mondays are given to residents who would just like to keep fit and the rest of the training days are for the boxers who are competing or is training to become professional boxers and kick boxers.

Training starts from 6 pm until 8 pm at the Danie van Zyl Recreation Centre. The age group for the academy is from seven years old to forty years old and according to Moorcroft, the academy has been a registered non-profit organisation for the last four years.

“Boxing teaches anyone discipline, we need that in our lives. Boxing also assists the youngsters with their concentration at school. It’s an art to be a boxer and it requires discipline,” explained Moorcroft.
