Makoti survives raging inferno

"The money donated will be used to purchase school uniforms for the children who lost their clothes in the fire."

Newlywed Kiki Modiko lost her dowry and furniture after a raging fire engulfed her parents’ home in Dobsonville on November 21. The blaze, which started at about 4.30 am destroyed everything in its path, sparing the inhabitants.

She said, “The fire started just 11 days after my wedding. My wedding presents and my furniture were all destroyed in the fire.

“After the fire-ravaged my shack, it spread to my brother’s nearby shack and destroy everything inside. He managed to wake his three children and they all escaped with their lives.”

The Modiko family were taken to a local clinic to receive treatment for smoke inhalation. She said that among the items burned in the fire were a television set, fridge, a TV stand, a bedroom suite and her wedding gifts.

Modiko added, “We do not know what the cause of the fire was which destroyed the two shacks in our yard.”

The Dobsonville-based Methodist Church Reverend Peter Mosia said that congregants and the Young Men’s Guild members donated the shack to the family.

He said, “The unexpected fire nearly wiped out the Modiko family, but they survived through God’s grace.

“It is ironic that just a few days before the fire the family were celebrating their daughter’s. We held a prayer session on the scene, declaring that a similar incident would not happen again.”

The Wards 47 and 48 Democratic Alliance (DA) requested a donation from the Build It hardware store in Zola to donate a second shack to the bride. Ward 47 and 48 DA PR councillor Nakita Dellwaria said they also received donations of clothing, cash, toiletries and groceries for the Modiko family.

She said, “The money donated will be used to purchase school uniforms for the children who lost their clothes in the fire.”

The Ward 48 DA chairperson, Carol Kodise said that the donations made by residents were appreciated and she urged them to continue reaching out to those who are less fortunate in the community.
