The community of Protea Glen Ext 16 and 31 were hugely affected by a storm that swept through Johannesburg last year on December 31. Families have since been attempting to pick up the pieces and rebuild their homes.

The Protea Glen Crisis Committee was borne out of this disaster as residents are continuing their search for answers as to how a storm could’ve caused that much damage to newly built homes.

December and January are South Africa’s rainy seasons, particularly Gauteng, it is thus incredibly important that residents remain vigilant during this time.

Former ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak gave tips for what to do and what not to do during a storm following a storm that battered in Durban last year.

During last year’s Johannesburg storms two men from Lenasia died in their vehicle when a tree fell onto the vehicle while they were parked on the side of the road waiting for the storm to subside. It is also incredibly important to exercise caution when in a vehicle.
