What happened to the saying that states that my child is your child and that states that it takes a village to raise a child?

Neighbours are supposed to be like parents or uncles, not the reason why children suffer in the darkest place of their lives or kill their trust. On November 29, the Office of the MEC of Community Safety together with Orlando Police Station.

Councillors, social workers and Community Policing Forum (CPF) embarked on a tour to visit victims of abuse to offer their assistance where it is needed, the initiative was to Commemorate 16 Days of Activism against women and child abuse.

In all the houses they visited on that day there seemed to be a similarity, most of the perpetrators were people the children grew up next to.

The victims have not accepted it in their heart and still finding it hard to deal with the situation, tears ran like a river in their eyes as the visitors tried to comfort them with words of encouragement it was clear that they have not fully dealt with the incident. Most people will not understand their pain as they never experienced what they have experienced.

Councillor Brenda Dammie said they deeply share the pain with the victims and the parents. She alluded that they should understand that what has happened to them is not their fault and promised that they as the community leaders together with their stakeholders will ensure that they get all the help they need.

“Children are violated in our doorsteps. People around the community must play an active role to protect these children,” she said.

Councillor Sechaba Khumalo said a real man will never rape his child, while he has a wife. He requested that the society too has the right to know the abusers and where they live.

He said he is happy that the children have built a strong relationship with their local police that is dealing with their cases as in most of the houses they saw them running to them to give them a warm hug.
