Lyrics are more important than beats

The duo decided to form a group called Balex and have since started pushing their own music online.

When Simphiwe Mapeya and James Phiri met they were connected by one element which was hip-hop music. The duo decided to form a group called Balex and have since started pushing their own music online.

Mapeya said they started doing music using their laptop, but with time they decided to have a studio.

“I love informative lyrics. Our music is not just great beats but the songs have a message as well. We have an Ep album out that we recorded in June this year, it has six tracks on it and online a lot of people love it,” he said.

Phiri said their music has a lot to do with what is happening in their lives that is why their age group relates to their music.

“Our tracks have a message, track one talks about being unpaid, it talks about the challenges we had not being financially stable that inspired the song.

“Track two is called ‘rich is gangster’, it was inspired by the street life and what we saw in our community a lot of people chose crime over school.

“Track three is called ‘crown’ lady and it is dedicated to all women because they are queens and we should treat them with respect. So our singles have messages it’s not just music, “he said.
