HIV awareness campaigns are meant for us all

People were not only tested for HIV but other chronic illnesses or vitals such as Sugar Diabetes and High Blood Pressure.

On Friday, November 23, an HIV awareness campaign was held at the Pimville Community Centre for Pimville residents and those in surrounding areas. The campaign was held by the Perinatal HIV Research Unit (PHRU), which is located at the New Nurses home in Christ Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital.

The campaign was geared at raising awareness on health; to inform the community more about HIV, its dangers, risks and how to prevent it because prevention is better than cure, to also raise awareness on the AIDS pandemic and to mourn all those who died from it as World AIDS Day is around the corner.

The community was given education about HIV because of the stigma and prejudice about it in the modern society and in most cases, people infected and affected with HIV are being rejected or experience physical and verbal abuse.

The Campaign was in collaboration with representatives from local stakeholders such as Mo-Afrika Ithlokomele, City of Johannesburg Region D, Soweto HIV/AIDS Counsellors Association (SOHACA), Department of Health, they also did HIV testing and counselling.

“The testing section was open to everyone both senior citizens and the youth, it is actually our way to curb the spread of HIV because of the multiple deaths caused by it in the society,” said Lindiwe Mehlape, one of the organisers of the campaign.

“We encouraged people to use condoms every time they engage in sexual activities and there were also partnerships between various stakeholders within the community,” said one of the organisers of the campaign, Phumla Madi.
