All hail the new queen of Soweto !!!

The new queen of Soweto walks away with a grand prize work more than R350 000 which includes a cash prize of R100 000.

The new queen of Soweto was crowned this past weekend at the glitz and glam event held at the Soweto Theatre. Nokukhanya Kunene from Protea Glen walked away with the prestigious crown sponsored by White Star Super Maize Meal after trying for the third time.

Kunene takes over the crown from Busisiwe Mmotla who reigned supreme from December last year until this past weekend. The 29th edition of the Miss Soweto Pageant was a highly contested affair by 20 beautiful and intelligent young women who made it to the finals.

Bona magazine’s Beauty Editor, Grace Mantjiu, Zinhle Mthembu from Clinix Health Group, Rhythm City actress, Nolo Phiri, and Miss Soweto 2015, Buhle Xulu made the judging panel and were tasked with a difficult job of selecting the new queen and her princesses.

Before midnight, the judges had already made their decision and 23-year-old Kunene emerged as a favourite flanked by her first princess Nomfanelo Mabona and second princess Zandile Lebuso.

“I feel so excited especially because I was not expecting this. This was my third time entering this competition and Busi, the outgoing Miss Soweto encouraged me to never give up,” says Kunene.

“Even though there were challenges, giving up is never an option. We do this also to encourage young girls to never give up on their dreams.”

The new queen of Soweto walks away with a grand prize work more than R350 000 which includes a cash prize of R100 000. In addition to that, she will get to be an ambassador for White Star Super Maize Meal during her tenure as Miss Soweto.

Also included in the prize is medical aid cover worth R200 000, sponsored by Clinix Health Group and an Intec College bursary worth R20 000.

Kunene was not the only winner of the day. The first princess Nomfanelo Mabona from Bramfischer was also crowned Miss Social Butterfly while Zandile Lebus from Pimville was named Miss Even & Lovely and took home a R10 000 cash prize.

Speaking on behalf of the main sponsor, White Star Super Maize Meal Miss Soweto 2014 Lungile Buhale said she was impressed with this year’s pageant.

“The production was amazing and the competition was also fierce and tough. On behalf of White Star, I think they chose the cream of the crop.

“We had girls from all different facets in terms of education, we had teachers and even girls doing engineering and so forth, so from a brand perspective I think we chose the stars,” said Buhale.

She believes that the winner deserves the crown due to her persistence nature and hard work.

“She has proven that she is a go-getter. She has entered the competition three times and becoming the first princess two times. This year she just proved that if you want something, you must just go for it and own the crown,” concluded Buhale.

It was indeed a night of the stars with actor Vusi Kunene and Jozi FM’s Refilwe Motsei as programme directors. Zakes Bantwini brought the house down with his dance moves when he performed his old and new hits.
