Although the #GlobalCitizenFestival advocated gender equality and safety for all women, this group numbered among the many victims of last night’s trauma.
After a successful Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100 last, attendees who were waiting for their assortment of transport and Uber and Taxify cabs outside the adjacent Nasrec Sasol garage reported that chaos broke out when a number of people were harassed and mugged at knife-and gunpoint.
There was a lot of traffic, caused by the event of course, and many attendees experienced long waiting periods for their transport.
@JoburgMPD where were you last night AFTER the #GlobalCitizenFestivalSA when people were being mugged & harassed by thugs?? You were everywhere BEFORE the show to ensure no one without access got in – but AFTER?? #Sasol

There were allegedly no cops on site and, according to the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department’s superintendent Wayne Minnaar, the JMPD was responsible for crime prevention, along with the SAPS.
However, the JMPD officers had their hands full directing traffic out of the FNB Stadium area and, according to the SAPS National spokesperson Vishnu Naidoo, one reported case has led to an arrest.
