Meadowlands is blessed with an abundance of musical talent, many of whom are often shunned by the decision-makers in the industry.

Despite having experienced these closed doors, Tshegofatso ‘Ghost’ Letoaba and Papi Mathebula have co-founded of Ghost Productions which advocates an open door policy for those venturing into the cutthroat music industry.

Letoaba said that the pair is ghostwriters who write and produce tracks for other artists to perform.

He said, “We compose, produce, write lyrics and attend shows to promote your music because we believe that everyone has a dream.”

The duo started working with West Funk which is made up of aspiring hip-hop artists, Glory Makhathini, Sihle Mkhonza, Linda Dunga, Mthokozisi Tshabalala and Mandla Nkosi-Madlopha after the group recorded a track in Zone Two which the pair charged them for before working with the sample tracks after the initial recording was complete.

West Funk is a group of young up-and-coming rappers which was formed at school and whose focus has been making quality music.

“The first time we met Glory, he recorded a hip-hop track to a Gqom beat which surprised us,” said group member, Makhathini.

“In our spare time we work on beats and see if we can cook up something and we were inspired from our younger days and we have a strong belief in our abilities to produce great music,” Letoaba said.

He added, “Every time we hear a beat, we play on it, try to find the flow and start working on it. When I was younger, I was told that a child who is not allowed imagine, is a child without a dream.”

“We are not in this for fun, but we see a future in this industry and we want to leave a legacy for the next generation. One thing that I always tell them, is critics push you to do more and never let them pull you down because you can be proud that at least someone has listened to that song.”

Mathebula said, “The more people see what we do, the more we tell them about our social media platforms where they can start following our work. Letoaba believes that the more people the group reaches, the more Sowetans can grow by using the internet as a tool to learn new techniques which they apply during production.
