Don’t knock their hustle

The second annual Hookah Fest Summer event returned to Ndofaya with more entertainment and surprises on the line-up.

The second annual Hookah Fest Summer event returned to Ndofaya with more entertainment and surprises on the line-up.

Thato Olifant and Mpho Masutla are the brains behind the hooker fest idea and say that they drew their inspiration to host the event from the Soweto Sunday Cookouts.

Masutla said, “With unemployment in the country as high as it currently stands, we thought, ‘Why not create something positive instead of focusing on the negative’.”

“This is not only about entertaining people, but about creating employment, supporting local businesses and giving local artists and DJs exposure and a platform to push their music.”

To Meadowlands residents, the pair is known as 1852 hustlers which is the area code and hustle because they have created something which will entertain people.

Olifant said, “We sat down and thought about this and we agreed that we would give it a try and see how the idea would be received. To our surprise, our idea was loved, judging by the attendance.”

Masutla elaborated on the stumbling blocks and a few of the hurdles they enterprise faces and said, “One problem is that we usually have to outsource some of the services, which helps local businesses, so we try to make it possible with the money our parents invest into the business.

“Organising the first event was a bit costly but with their help and support, it surpassed our expectation. To our surprise, we did not expect as much feedback as the first event in 2017 was a success and people wanted more from us. This year we are doing it again,” said Masutla.

Olifant added, “Since the first event, we have learnt a few valuable lessons which we will incorporate into this event. There will be live performances from local artists and DJ as well as stalls so that our local brands can showcase their creative work.”

“This year security will be tight, the ticket venue will be elsewhere, and there will be prizes on offer for patrons.”

This is a chance for business in Meadowlands to come and show their best and support each other through the vast networking of entrepreneurs who support the idea.

1852 hustlers have a surprise lineup for their supporters who will be attending the Ndofaya Hooker Fest on December 1 at the Zone Two Lutheran Church.
