Shocking conditions for Ext 4 flat residents

According to the aggrieved residents, they have reported these issues to Marlon Mitchell but nothing has been done to date.

According to residents living at the flats in Eldorado Park Ext 4, service delivery or in their words-the lack thereof, is a matter of serious concern. Sophia Gordan, who lives at Barry Flat in Extension 4, conditions at the flats are deteriorating each day.

She said, “For years now, we have been sitting with the same problem. Our taps are leaking, our ceilings are about to cave in because of water leaks and our pipes are rusted, the list is endless.”

Another resident, 63-year-old Mariam Mark, who lives at Abel Flat, said that the electrical wiring in her flat is a hazard.

Leaking water staining the ceilings and walls in the flats.

“Quite a few of my wall plugs are not working. One of the plugs in my lounge sparks every now and then. We have even resorted to pushing a chair against the wall so my granddaughter doesn’t get hurt. My bathroom is another room in my flat that worries me, I wake up every morning and my floor is flooded with water,” said Mark.

“Last week I woke up to a foul stench when I entered my bathroom the water leaking through the pipes were brown in colour and it reeked of faeces, no person should ever live like this,” she added.

Avril Plaatjies spoke on behalf of her mother who lives at Gavin Flat and said that her mother’s living condition only seems to be getting worse.

Bath tiles are loose and pipes are rusted.

“We have reported these issues many times but the problem persists. Even when we get our own plumbers to fix our unit, the problem continues because all the units are damaged. My mother is a pensioner, she cannot afford to pay private companies,” said Plaatjies.

According to the aggrieved residents, they have reported these issues to Marlon Mitchell but nothing has been done to date.

“Every time we report it, we are promised that someone will assist, but it seldom materialises,” said another resident, Charlotte Lemmetjies.

The latest infrastructural issue causing a stink at the flats is a blocked drain. “For months now this drain issue has been ongoing, but it is hasn’t been fixed ever since,” said Gordan.
