A widow’s wait

Gertrude Roux never thought that losing her husband would cause her so much stress.

After being married for over forty years, Gertrude Roux never thought that losing her husband would cause her so much stress. The late George Roux was the breadwinner for his family and after his passing last year, his wife Gertrude Roux had been waiting to receive the money her husband left for her.

“I got married in 1976 and my husband passed away last year in May. The bank doesn’t want to accept my old marriage certificate anymore so they told me to go to Home Affairs to make an application for a new one.”

“I went and Home Affairs gave me a form and I paid R75 for the form. They gave me a receipt that I had to take to the magistrate’s office in Roodepoort so that they can confirm that I am linked to George Roux,” explained Roux.

According to Roux, the receipt was left at the magistrate’s office. This all happened last year after her husband’s death. The application which Roux filled in was on June 9, in 2017.

Roux added: “They said that I must come back after six weeks, after six weeks I went and they told me that they don’t have the marriage certificate yet. From then, I went every week there and they kept on telling me that I must come next week, even until now.”

Two weeks ago, Roux went to the offices again and they then gave her former Minister of Home Affairs Malusi Gigaba’s phone number and email address.

“My daughter phoned the number and there was no answer and no one is responding to the email, so this is where I am right now,” said Roux.

The widow has been sent back and forth and no one is actually telling her the issue. Before publishing this article, Roux was referred to social worker Leandi Macmaneveldt to assist or refer her to the relevant officials for the matter to be resolved.
