City embarks on child safety campaign

The City of Johannesburg's Department of Public Safety launched a Children Safety Campaign in partnership with Newclare Primary School.

As the month of November comes to an end, it is important to recognise the month for what it is and that would be Children’s Month. On November 6, the City of Johannesburg’s Department of Public Safety launched the Children Safety Campaign in partnership with Newclare Primary School.

According to a statement released by MMC of Public Safety, Councillor Michael Sun, the day started with him and the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) conducting scholar transport safety inspections as well as engaging drivers on legal compliance.

The program was officially opened by the school’s principal Derek Eastwood who has been with the school for 37 years. The event was fun-filled and at the same time educational on all aspects of children safety, including; road and pedestrian safety, water safety, personal violation awareness and drug awareness.

The Emergency Management Services (EMS) mascot and EMS Public Information Education and Relations team kept the children and teachers entertained with educational plays.

MMC Sun said: “It was important for us to return to Newclare after the shooting incident in July which left many children and residents traumatised.

“We are not only here to ensure the community is kept safe but also to recognise those members of the community for assisting the children during that difficult time. I personally want to thank these brave men and women for their active citizenry.”

School teachers Derek Eastwood, Rhoma Doubell, Tshepo Senekoane, Anita Williams and councillors Mureeda Jadwat and Fatema Farred received Certificates of Appreciation for their active citizenry.

As part of the campaign, the teachers at Newclare Primary will take part in two days of Basic Firefighting and First Aid training.

The Department of Public Safety is said to continue to roll out educational programmes to other schools to promote safety and the well-being of the children of our City.
