Milnerton Primary School broken into

Thieves ransack school, leaving classrooms flooded.

Learners at Milnerton Primary School were forced to spend their day on the school’s sports field on November 12.

Educators and learners arrived at school to find that a few classrooms were broken into. The acting deputy principal, Earl Carels confirmed that the classrooms were broken into over the weekend.

He said, “When we arrived at school, we found the water gushing out at the back. We noticed that the taps and water pipes were stolen and that is what caused the flooding in most of our classes at the back. The classes affected belonged to our lower grades.”

“The foundation phase learners, our Grades 1 to 3 pupils had to spend their day on the field under the trees, “he added.

Learners spent the day on the field.

Carels said that everyone at the school is shaken and that they are worried about the criminal element having access to the school.

He said, “It is no secret that our school is not entirely fenced. This makes it easy for criminals to enter our school grounds, they can easily walk in and do what they want to on the school premises.”

“It is disappointing when things like this happen because we all want what’s best for our children and the community at large. So, when teaching time is disrupted, it saddens all the teachers at our school,” he added.

According to Carels that the water pipes were fixed on the day and the classrooms were cleaned, ensuring that learners could be taught in their classes the following day.

“School resumed on November 13 with at least two classrooms which still needed to be repaired. The school has reported the matter to the police as well as the district.

“We went through all the procedures and followed protocol so the district is aware of the incident. We are worried about the safety of our learners,” he said.

The school has been trying to raise money to build a wall but after years of unsuccessful fundraising, the problem still persists. Anyone who would like donate towards building a wall can visit the school.
