Liesl Laurie urges learners to ‘Be a blessing every day!’

"Listening to the girls and as Liesl can attest to, these girls deserve a break and upliftment. Their stories really touched my heart," Martin Bester.

Former Miss South Africa, Liesl Laurie is giving back to her hometown of Eldorado Park. The Jacaranda FM breakfast show presenter invited Martin Bester and the breakfast team to her hometown in hopes of making a difference in a few matriculants’ lives.

With the matric finals in full swing, many learners are thinking about their matric dances which will be taking place in early December.

The Jacaranda breakfast team, which also go by the name Good Morning Angels (GMA), selected seven girls from Silver Oaks Secondary School who they will be sponsoring for their upcoming matric ball. Martin Bester from GMA said that there is a strong link to the Eldorado Park community through Liesl.

“Listening to the girls and as Liesl can attest to, these girls deserve a break and upliftment. Their stories really touched my heart and for that reason, we decided to help,” said Bester.

Laurie, who was a student at Silver Oaks Secondary School said that the seven girls who were selected have been working hard and needed inspiration to make it through the finals.

“Miss Crawage, the school administrator, brought the plight of these girls to our attention. Most of these young ladies are growing up in very difficult circumstances just like I did and my wish is to educate them and have them understand that your circumstances do not have to define your future,” said Laurie.

The former Miss South Africa said that she lives to be a blessing to others and a beacon of hope for those who need it most.

“Being able to give back, use my influence and my connections to make someone’s day special makes me feel like I have done something that is really worthwhile. Seeing the excitement in their eyes is so much more fulfilling than any pair of shoes or bag. It’s about being a blessing to others everyday! It’s about doing something amazing for someone who will never be able to pay you back,” she said.

Anneline Fahmay, Ashley Tlou, Happiness Thomas, Nkateko Mathebula , Madimakatso Molise, Princess Mathebula and Zuzile Zwane are the seven learners who were selected.

Merica Van der Walt from the House of Superior Clothing will sponsor each girl with a dress, a pair of shoes and accessories to match her look. Walter Wurth from Follicle Hair Atelier will do a consultation with each girl on what look they want for their hair on the day of the dance.

The team will help all the girls on December 11 to create their perfect hair look. Walter will also sponsor the girls with make-up on the day. Martin Bester will arrange a vehicle for each girl on the day.
