Erasing terrible memories with smoke

The aim of the initiative is to introduce the learners to the programme and to make them aware of the sport that is available to them.

Back in July, the team who is part of the MotoKids Rider Development Programme along with international racer Brian Capper visited Riverlea Primary School to showcase the programme to learners.

The aim of the initiative is to introduce the learners to the programme and to make them aware of the sport that is available to them. Last month the team ran the initiative at Newclare Primary School.

The team consisted of Brian Capper of the Brian Capper Racing (BRC), team Herbalife Yamaha rider Thabang Katees and Neil van der Ross of Motorsport SA.

MotoKids Coach van der Ross explained: “The school gates were the scene of a gangland shooting about two to three months ago.

“The kids of the school were badly traumatised by this event and needed counselling, this I learnt at community outreach day where the Gauteng MEC for Community Safety came to address the residents of Westbury and Newclare about the scourge of gangsterism and drugs.”

“Speaking to the principal, the bikers at the event said they would try assisting the school. I contacted Brian and added him to the plan. We erected the Moto Kids gazebo and Brian Capper and Thabang Katees performed stunts for the kids.”

The sound of the bikes, as well as the smoke, created the hype of excitement between the learners and teachers, and once the riders started with their stunts the excitement just increased.

“The chanting at the end of the show for more did not stop until the principal intervened,” added van der Ross.

After the show, the team had a Question and Answer session with the learners and both riders shared their stories of their respective sports. According to the coach, the principal, Derek Eastwood and his staff were grateful for what was accomplished with the learners on that day.
