Waste is piling up in Eldorado Park Ext 4

Extension Four fields turned into a wasteland.

Residents living at the flats in Eldorado Park feel that they are the forgotten few in the community because no one ever hears their cries.

According to them, they have reported all manner of issues but are almost never assisted. Over the last few years, issues at the flats seem to be getting worse.

According to a 60-year-old flat resident, Mary-Ann Van Wyk, the open veld surrounding the flats are slowly turning into dump site. Residents are forced to dump their waste materials because there are not enough bins provided for them.

“The shortage of bins has been going on for years now. There are two skips available, but they have been placed too far and not everyone has access to it. As a result, residents have resorted to dumping their refuse in the nearby velds,” said Van Wyk.

Another resident, Shereen Margrose said that they have reported the issue to the local councillors but until now, nothing has been done.

“This is a matter of serious concern, the waste is piling up and this causes an unbearable stench. The waste is not healthy for our children and attracts rodents. If you don’t keep your door closed, these pests enter your home. We can’t keep living like this,” said Margrose.

Waste materials have piled up, creating optimal conditions for rodents to breed.

Residents also said that the grass surrounding the flats are too long which makes it an ideal hiding spot for criminals who pounce at any time of the day.

“The veld is not level at all, there is a huge sand hill where criminals hide and addicts smoke their drugs, the area is not safe at all,” said Van Wyk. “I can’t even remember the last time City Parks came out to cut the grass and clean the area,” she added.

In a telephonic conversation with ward councillor, Peter Rafferty he said that councillors cannot be blamed because every time bins are supplied, they are stolen. Rafferty said that councillor Fazel Jaffer has arranged for two skips to be placed at the Ext 4 flats because ordinary bins do not last.

“It’s difficult for us to continuously replace bins because the lifespan is approximately five years. People need to utilise those skips and take responsibility,” said Rafferty.
