WATCH: Rudy Bessit dispensing some words of wisdom to dispel the doubts

Casting off the chains.

For 35-year-old entertainer, Rudy Bessit, the word ‘forget’ became a mantra to live by and an escape from a painful past which has haunted him for most of his adult life.

The comedian, whose stage production, A hair thingy, has caused a stir in entertainment and social media circles, has recently penned a book titled Forget which chronicles his journey as an abuse victim from Westenburg, Polokwane and the challenges he faced as he battled to break free from the chains his past kept him shackled in.

Bessit said, “My mother wanted to forget the incident which would shape who I would become and taught me to erase it completely by repeating the word ‘forget’ each time my past would haunt me. It occurred to me that if I could succeed in this, I could apply the same rule to all other painful incidents in my past.”

He added that he continued wrestling with the demons of his past which were triggered by sights, sounds and smells. Because of these reminders, he would constantly seek out friends and relatives whom he had confided in to corroborate the truth about his experience.

According to Bessit, the nightmarish experiences haunted him and he often found himself at loggerheads with those whose actions turned others into victims. This, coupled with being stuck in a rut at the time he was employed in a nine-to-five job led him to realise that his inner creative spirit was screaming to be released.

About two years ago, he walked away from a lucrative, secure job and the security which goes with this, to pursue his dreams. He found Ru-Flow Productions and penned Forget in which he recounts his traumatic past and how opening up about his life has helped him heal and discover who he is and what it is he truly wants to achieve.

Describing the book as cathartic, Bessit said, “I know that I am not alone and the purpose of this book is to encourage others to speak out. Letting it all out has been therapeutic for me and hopefully those who read the book will learn to forgive, which has proven to be liberating for me.”

As he reflected on his journey, the comedian turned author could not help but feel that he has come full circle, expressing his desire to touch the lives of women and the youth whose plight he holds dear.

As he navigates the challenges which go along with being a self-published author, Bessit’s one-man production, A hair thingy will be staged in Heidedal, Bloemfontein on December 8. Anyone wishing to get in touch with him may do so on his Facebook page @Rudy Ru Bessit.
