LISTEN: More than 8 000 bags of litter collected in Johannesburg

12 more lucky people are going to Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100.

The City of Johannesburg in partnership with international advocacy organisation, Global Citizen, hosted a three-day clean-up across the country aimed at improving the environment three months ahead of Global Citizen Mandela: 100.

On November 17, over 300 volunteers got their hands dirty cleaning around the open space opposite Maponya Mall and making sure that the streets are clean in Pimville [Soweto].

Executive Mayor, Herman Mashaba, Global Citizen’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Hugh Evans and K Naomi, Global Citizen Advocate all came out to show their support on the last day. Miss Earth South Africa 2018, Nazia Wadee also joined hundreds of people who were in Pimville.

“I am generally passionate about clean-up campaigns, as Miss Earth South Africa, we drive a campaign called #WasteStopsWithMe and just like #AreSebetseng, it encourages the community to unite and work together in taking the responsibility to keep our environment clean,” Wadee said.

In Johannesburg alone, over 8000 bags of litter have been collected. Volunteers stood a chance to win tickets to the much-anticipated Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100, which is set to take place on December 2 at the FNB Stadium.

12 lucky winners walked away with double tickets including a first year education student at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) Amo Msimang.

“I am really excited, I am over the moon, I am going to see Beyoncè, I mean that’s a big deal. I am taking my friend, Asemahle with me, because we came together and we had agreed that who ever wins, we are going together,” said Msimang.

Mashaba said that this will serve as an encouragement to the communities to work together in keeping the country clean.
