Mndebele crowned Soweto’s best Grade 7 speller
Miss Soweto 2017 Busisiwe Mmotla continues to promote a culture of reading.
Miss Soweto 2017 Busisiwe Mmotla in partnership with White Star as a major sponsor, Clinix Health Group, and Nali Bali hosted a spellathon competition at Morris Isaacson School in Central Western Jabavu.
The main aim of the event was to motivate learners to take a keen interest in enriching their vocabulary and pronunciation skills.

The spellathon competition consisted of learners from Luyolo Senior Primary, Isu’Lihle Higher Primary, Indyebo Combined School, Impumelelo Combined School, Emisebeni Primary, and Thulani Primary who competed for the title of Soweto Best Grade 7 Speller.
Miss Soweto 2018 Finalists graced the spellathon competition and also participating in the spelling bee for fun.
Mthokozisi Mndebele was crowned Soweto Best Grade 7 speller from Luyolo Senior Primary and walked away with R2 000 from White Star for the school and himself.
Penelope Zwane took second position and third position went to Kimberly Mncube from Isu’Lihle Higher Primary School.

Mmotla said this competition will contribute towards improving the Learners ability to read and write competently. She mentioned that this is her last project as Miss Soweto but the spellathon competition will be an annual thing.
“I’m a teacher by profession, very passionate about education and I want to instill the importance of education to the learners. I want to motivate kids that they don’t only need to read for academics but for fun as well. Spellathon on its own helps them to improve their vocabulary and pronunciation.

“We have faith that this competition will stimulate an interest among pupils in learning about their languages and other subjects,” added Mmotla.
Mndebele said, “I don’t have words to express how I feel but I’m honoured and grateful that I was crowned Soweto Best Grade 7 speller.”

A teacher from Isu’Lihle Higher Primary Mpilo Mchunu said, “The competition is very inspiring because it sharpens them on how to pronounce words and understand their meaning. I feel happy and proud that our two learners managed to take it to the top three and the competition was very tough but they did their best.”
