‘No, we’re not staying grounded’

Aspiring pilots had the opportunity of talking to the aircraft captain.

Dobsonville based Kiddies Hope Centre took 11 of their learners on a flight to Durban’s King Shaka Airport as part of exposing them to careers in aviation.

According to the centre director Xolani Sithole, this year, their graduation ceremony theme is celebrating careers in aviation.

He said, “This year we educated our learners about the range of careers in aviation, especially being a pilot or a flight attendant.

“We also made them aware about the instructions flight attendants give passengers before the aircraft takes off.”

He said before the flight took off from OR Tambo Airport to King Shaka Airport in Durban, the young flight attendants had the luxury of receiving tips from professional flight attendants about fastening their seatbelts and using the emergency kits if the event of an emergency.

Sithole said their aspiring pilots had the opportunity of talking to the aircraft captain.

“Our young pilots also had the opportunity to get into the aircraft cockpit and take over the captain’s seat in Durban,” he said.

Seven of the aspiring young female flight attendants were wearing the air hostesses uniforms and four aspiring male pilots were in full pilot’s uniform.

He said on November 17 they will be hosting their graduation ceremony at the Kopanong Hall.

“The theme of the graduation is ‘being a flight attendant’ this year.

“That is why our learners were wearing the uniform on their trip to Durban,” he said.

According to Sithole, their centre’s stakeholders made a commitment that from now onwards they would take all their learners on a similar trip towards the end of each year.

He added that they would also continue to work in partnership with Tshepo Themba Private Hospital to celebrate careers in health like they did last year.

On November 17, the Tshepo Themba Private Hospital staff will form part of the graduation ceremony.

They will be raising awareness about diabetes as November is Diabetes Awareness Month.

He urged parents to go to their centre to purchase tickets for their graduation ceremony.
