LISTEN: Tribute to fallen heroes

Following the passing of the City of Johannesburg Emergency Services firefighters who lost their lives while attending a fire incident in the Inner City, the EMS personnel went on to pay their tribute to their colleagues by running in the Old Mutual Soweto Marathon dressed in their Bunker Gears.

The firefighters lost their lives while attending to a fire incident which also left other colleagues injured.

In paying tribute, the EMS employees were kitted in full firefighting gear when they took on the 42.2km marathon which started and finished at the Soweto’s FNB Stadium.

The fighters were dressed in firefighters flash hoods, helmets, turnout pants, jackets and instead of firefighting boots, they wore running shoes to avoid blisters.

According to EMS spokesperson, Robert Mulaudzi the firefighters suit is quite heavy and it remained to be seen whether they will survive the test.

“The gear was heavy but we managed to pass the test and we to vowed to conquer the difficult route in memory of our fellow fallen colleagues.

“We focused on temperature and had to keep hydrated while running in the extremely hot heavy gear,” said Mulaudzi.

He said they urged all residents of the City of Johannesburg particularly the residents of Soweto and surrounding areas to rally behind the firefighters all the way to the finish line.

“That was also an opportunity for us as an organisation to alert the residents about the dangers which firefighters are faced with when responding to emergencies at all times,” said Mulaudzi.
