LISTEN: Kicking bad habits with sport

The soccer-mad Ewit Gierke said that the aim of the soccer festival was to revive the sport in Ext 4 and to kick all the bad habits out of the community.

Soccer coach Ewert Gierke has big dreams for Eldorado Park, especially for Extension Two, -Three and -Four residents.

The coach has taken it upon himself to clean up the open field next to Silver Oaks Secondary School in Mahonie Crescent and transform it into a veritable field of dreams for the soccer-loving fraternity.

He said, “No one will ever forget the tragedy which occurred here a few years ago. A woman’s lifeless body was found one morning, she was bruised and had a bottle shoved into her private parts.

“This field has gained notoriety for such horrific crimes. This is why I decided to make positive use of this open space,” he added.

Gierke will be hosting a soccer festival on November 17 at the soccer grounds.

“We would like to rekindle the Wings team of Ext 4, the Kappa boys of Ext 4 and the Pirates of Extension Three. The soccer festival is for everyone, we want residents to come with their picnic baskets, camp chairs and gazebos and just have fun with us,” he said.

The soccer-mad Gierke said that the aim of the soccer festival was to revive the sport in Ext 4 and to kick all the bad habits out of the community. He added that the stigma Eldos possesses needs to be changed. According to him, there are countless positive initiatives taking place in the community which are not recognised.

“The main focus is always on drugs and gangsterism. We want to make people aware that there is indeed some kind of development taking place in the community. Everyone is invited, come dressed in black and orange,” said Gierke.
