UJ Students assist a local business through their assignment

"We are passionate about helping businesses that seem to be stuck, with the business knowledge we have and to encourage them to move forward," said Andiswa Mlaheni.

University of Johannesburg (UJ) students doing third year in Entrepreneurship, were given an assignment for one of their modules, Marketing, to help small businesses in terms of enhancing them and marketing them.

This practical module gave them a platform to work with a small start-up business called Nomakholwa Consulting Services owned by Thokozani Khumalo, which had challenges just like any other, and the students used what they were taught and the knowledge they had in terms of business to turn things around for Khumalo.

“This was not an easy task but we managed to do so for it is what we love, splitting each other into different departments where we had graphic designers, marketers, admin etc.

“We came up with strategies on how to turn it around and make sales. We changed the business profile to a more professional and appealing profile, activated and redesigned all social media platforms, put together a workshop to market the business services and way more which then gained the business a number of following, doing all of that at no cost,” said Andiswa Mhaleni, one of the students.

One of their general findings was that most small black-owned businesses lack aspects such as accurate information, marketing skills and a lot of other resources that can help businesses grow.

“We are passionate about helping businesses that seem to be stuck, with the business knowledge we have and to encourage them to move forward,” said Mlaheni.

The group says that they are motivated to encourage young people to start businesses and for them to learn all aspects and strategies to pull away from business failure.
