Choirs battle it out at a National Choir Festival

We are proud to be part of the exciting and diverse musical fibre of Africa.

The Ellis Park Arena was filled with harmonic sounds and perfect pitch on October 27 and 28 as more than 30 choirs from Gauteng and surrounding areas lined up to compete in the Gauteng Regional Championship of the 2018 Old Mutual National Choir Festival.

The impressive choral showdown, which is renowned for the great spirit of collaboration between communities, organisers, participants and audiences, also featured choirs from the Kingdom of Eswatini, Zimbabwe and Botswana.

As South Africa’s biggest annual choral music festival and one of the most thrilling music events in the world, the National Choir Festival has been raising the bar, year after year, for 41 years.

The Old Mutual National Choir Festival prides itself on its rich heritage of cultivating talent and enabling positive futures and it has been a stepping stone for many well-known artists whose first performances were on a National Choir Festival stage.

“We are proud to be part of the exciting and diverse musical fibre of Africa. The incredible energy that each choir member brings to every performance, the meticulous mastery of the conductors, and the audience that cheers the choirs to victory cannot be missed. The time is now to showcase the best lyrical talent that is on offer.

“The 2018 Old Mutual National Choir Festival kicked off on September 8 in the Eastern Cape, followed by regional championships in Free State (including Northern Cape province), Western Cape and Gauteng.

“2018 Old Mutual National Choir Festival Gauteng Regional Championship overall winners in the Standard Category, Maikano Serenaders from Botswana and in the large category Kopano Chorus took the title,” says Thobile Tshabalala, Head of Brand at Old Mutual.
