Most of the learners did very well during the competition but unfortunately, there had to be one winner and the overall winners were Musi High School debaters while the best speaker was Zizipho Mjikwa from Thaba Jabula Senior Secondary School.

The topic of the debate was, why is African literature important? While the impromptu topic was, the proper remedy for South Africa is best expressed through liberation, not freedom.

The main purpose of the debate was to raise awareness on Ubuntu (Humanity), this was to also pay tribute to Khotso Seathlolo who was a political activist and was the Soweto Student Representative Council (SSRC) President thus his daughter Tharollo Seathlolo runs the Khotso Seathlolo Foundation and she was also the program director of the debate.

Other purposes of the debate were for social cohesion, for learners to have the ability to show their knowledge, good reasoning on issues surrounding them, for them to be able to state facts and opinions and to also be able to improve their vocabulary skills.

“Bantu thoughts is a book club and an art movement armed with the express intent of engaging African indigenous thoughts through literature and art,” said one of the Bantu Thoughts members, Thandolethu Lethoko.

Prizes were given to all the members of the debate teams to congratulate and honour them for their excellent performance during the debate.

Learners performed activities such as, Xitsonga dance, poetry and singing as a form of entertainment to the guests.

“We are geared at getting young people to discern the difference between liberation and freedom and that there is society and economics which actually rules politics,” said Seathlolo.
