What are the benefits of regular cycling?

"I love riding my bike."

Children absolutely love to cycle, it gives them a sense of freedom, allowing them to explore the outdoors, connect with friends and develop confidence as well as physical literacy.

With summer approaching, the days have become longer and warmer. This means that outdoor activities are on everyone’s to-do list. For 12-year-old Milano Van Rooyen, riding his bike is his favourite outdoor activity, it makes him feel free.

“I love riding my bike, it’s so much fun being able to pedal and watch my wheels travel at a high speed, I love adventure. Summertime is my favourite because I can ride my bike for a longer period of time, this means more fun for me,” he added.

Felicia Van Rooyen, who is Milano’s mother said that cycling allows her son not only to have fun but to keep fit as well.

“He fully enjoys his bicycle and I love it too because cycling is a good form of exercise, it allows him to de-stress after a long day at school,” said Van Rooyen.

“Cycling also allows him to do some sightseeing and allows him to become streetwise. I’ve noticed that he has become more independent since he started cycling, it is important to encourage a balanced lifestyle,” she added.

Cycling is mainly an aerobic activity, which means that your heart, blood vessels and lungs all get a workout. You will breathe deeper, perspire and experience increased body temperature, which will improve your overall fitness level.

The benefits of regular cycling include improved joint mobility, improved posture and mobility, increased cardiovascular fitness as well as good hand and eye co-ordination. Milano said that when he cycles it never feels like exercise because its something he loves to do.

“I learned that if we do what we love, it will never feel like work, there are so many ways to keep fit and cycling is mine,” he said.
