Sports takes centre stage at Milnerton Primary School

Marcia Le Roux, a parent who attended the sports day, said that the growing popularity of computers, video games and television resulted in children leading inactive lifestyles.

Sport is an integral part of the Eldorado Park school calendar and this highly-anticipated event on the school calendar sees primary and high schools participated because sport is an important part of the curriculum.

On October 29 and 30th, Milnerton Primary School in Extension Four hosted their annual sport days and both teachers and learners had fun. The learners were divided into three teams, each representing a different colour. The teams were named after cellphone brands, Cell C, Vodacom and MTN.

On Monday, the school hosted their field events, and the learners participated in long jump, high jump and shot put. Azra Jordaan, a Grade Six learner at the school said that she enjoyed this period because everyone is allowed to fully express themselves.

Moche Devensih (12), leading the pack in the 1200 metre race.

“I think all the learners will agree with me when I say that our sports day is something to look forward to. We can wear civvies, we’re on the field all day and our teachers seem more relaxed, it’s a nice environment to be in,” she said.

The following day, the school hosted its track events and the learners competed in long distance running, sprints and relay. Bontle Masilo (10) said that track events were her favourite because she could show off her running skills. Masilo scooped first place in the 2008 group 1200 meter run.

Marcia Le Roux, a parent who attended the sports day, said that the growing popularity of computers, video games and television resulted in children leading inactive lifestyles.

She said, “The time spent on these things could be spent on physical activities, so sports days like this make me happy because the children are getting in some exercise. A balanced school experience is very important, it’s more than just the books and classroom time,” she said.
