‘It all starts with one little bead’

Making a difference one bead at a time.

Beads are among the most intriguing and important symbols in African culture, past and present. The materials used in making beads are of a wide variety, this includes wood, glass, plastic, metal and stone. Beads are available in a wide variety of colours, ensuring there is something for everyone’s different taste.

Local craft fanatic, and founder of beads by F_Shaano, Feroshaan Mayet, is a lover of handcrafted jewellery and believes that with hard work he will be able to own a jewellery store that focuses on selling affordable handcrafted pieces.

Mayet said that he has always had a love for handcrafted creativity but decided to take it more seriously just over a year ago.

“I was at the mall one day, in Markham to be exact. There was a boy, probably not older than 10, he asked his mother to buy him a beaded bracelet, she refused because the item cost over R450. That is when I realised that I could do start my own bead business,” said Mayet.

“The sole purpose then and there was to create modern, affordable pieces that everyone could afford, it broke my heart that the little boy couldn’t have that bracelet,” he added.

Mayet said that he taught himself everything he needed to know about creating patterns for bracelets and necklaces.

“It hasn’t been an easy journey but practice makes perfect, I’m a firm believer in that,” he said.

Mayet said that when the time is right he wants to teach children in the Greater Eldorado Park, who are interested in arts and crafts, everything he has taught himself so far.

“So many of our youngsters need guidance and sense of purpose, I want to be that for them, one day I hope to have my own bead class, I want to make a difference in my community, one bead at a time,” said Mayet.

The bead enthusiast said that he would like to thank the Eldorado Park community for their endless support.

“Thank you to Dereleen James, Cheryl Pillay, Jesse Maart, Netehsa Armien, Sumaya’s house shop, Sonia Ellie, Twirl Models and Eldos Fashion Week, these people and organisations have been instrumental in my journey,” he said.
