Eskom technicians chased away in Doornkop while conducting meter audits

Eskom remains committed to ensuring reliable electricity supply to all its customers.

Parts of Doornkop Ext 4 in Soweto are currently without electricity supply. This, after community protests erupted and prevented Eskom technicians from completing the process of meter audits and supply disconnections for non-payment in the area.

The audit process aims to monitor the distribution of electricity supply by eliminating illegal connections and meter bypasses that cause overloading of transformers which result in unplanned outages.

Until Eskom is satisfied that the safety of its employees is not compromised, technicians will not be attending to any electricity related issues in the area.

The community is advised to send a signed petition to Eskom assuring Eskom that its employees will not be hindered from conducting their duties in the area. Eskom remains committed to ensuring reliable electricity supply to all its customers.

According to Innocentia Zabala of Eskom, the audits are done at random and that there’s no communication or announcement made beforehand when officials plan to visit a particular community.

“There’s a department that deals with audits and the purpose is to basically sort out electricity supply issues communities face. There are loyal Eskom customers and should be taken good care of,” she said.

Zabala said audits were previously conducted in Diepkloof, Protea and Bramfischerville. It is no secret that Eskom fears for the safety of its employees. Eskom technicians were again chased away in Bramfischerville Phase Four while auditing meters.

“We want our employees to work freely without being threatened by communities. It is pivotal to understand that Eskom is only trying to work to resolve power supply problems.

“That includes cutting off illegal connections, meter bypasses and disconnections for non-payment,” concluded Zabala.
