Viral video leads to real life opportunity

"I'm feeling so excited! I'm overwhelmed!" she said.

A young maths whiz has earned him and his mother an opportunity of a lifetime with his skills. Sbahle Zwane has been offered a scholarship to Curro Academy which will be opening in Protea Glen in 2019 and his mother has been offered a job at the school.

This came following a video of the 10-year-old displaying his skills to a police officer went viral. Sbahle displayed incredible multiplication skills in the video which caught the attention of Curro Holdings.

The school contacted his mother, Mbali Zwane, after an interview in which she said: “Maybe he might get exposure and as time goes by, who knows, there might be someone watching who can help get him into a good school.”



Her wish has been fulfilled.

Fergus Sampson, Operational Business Manager for the Meridian and Academy School Models at Curro Holdings said, “We believe that a good education is a cornerstone of developing quality leaders and unlocking South Africa’s potential.

“We’re excited to welcome Sbahle to our new school and to support him in mathematics and other subjects. This young man has enormous potential and we look forward to helping him nurture his natural talents.”

Mbali has also been offered employment by the school following years of unemployment. She plans on rewriting her matric, which according to her will help her gain her independence.

“I’m feeling so excited! I’m overwhelmed!” she said.

Her son, Sbahle wants to be a pilot in future. She however jokingly noted that children often grow and change their minds. Sbahle is also excited about the opportunities being in a private school will afford him, one of them being the opportunity to get more involved in sport which he loves.

He will be starting grade 5 at the school in January 2019. The school will offer grades R to 9.
