Spotlight shed on women in business

"As we are celebrating the centenary of Albertina Sisulu, it makes sense for us to honour all the women who broke the mould for all women, we should recognize all women in the country."

As South Africa celebrated the centenary year for Mama Albertina Sisulu on October 21, 2018, Standard Bank alongside with Topco media held the Top Women Conference at the Maslow Hotel, Sandton on the 17-18 October 2018 in an effort to empower women in business.

Among the speakers was South African Ambassador & former director general of the State Security Agency Sonto Kudjoe. The reasons South African women are continuing to break the mould was one of the key topics addressed by Kudjoe at the conference.

Foreign and political editor, Sophie Mokoena.

“We need platforms like top women conference to address such topics/conversations more often and to shine the light on all women who are making a difference in their communities and breaking the mould,” she said.

Dr Phumzile Mlambo Nquka, (first woman to be deputy president in SA), women like her who broke the mould, pathfinders, trailblazers are perfect examples to young women in the country that they could actually make it, if only they believe.

“As we are celebrating the centenary of Albertina Sisulu, it makes sense for us to honour all the women who broke the mould for all women, we should recognize all women in the country. Gill Markus, Albertina Sisulu, Lindiwe Sisulu to name a few,” said Kudjoe.

Noluthando Nkosi, a Soweto born businesswoman, was among the attendees of the conference. We caught up with Nkosi to hear more about her business.

(l-r) Samantha Perry, Vera Nagtegaal, Claudette Thorne, Asha Patel and Mymoena Ismail discussing about how to empower women and girls in the digital age.

“Curve Loving Online magazine is a magazine that started off as a dear dairy session in the form of a blog. The magazine is about body positivity, showing women that they could love themselves at any size, shape, colour,” she explained.

The one message that Sonto Kudjoe had for the girls and women of Soweto, which is one of the areas where the gender pay gap is most felt was that platforms like top women conference provide a unique networking opportunity.

“…You get to engage with different characters from all walks of life in the business world that have done it, tried it and worked it out and it’s a fantastic opportunity.

“Even if you are successful, you have to keep pushing. It’s very important to go out and network with different people, sell yourself. Just keep pushing!” she concluded.
