Residents call for Orlando East brigadier’s head

Member of the Gauteng Legislature, Ghana Makashule reminded the police that their duty was to protect the people from criminals and to serve the people which were the reasons they received a salary.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) and Orlando East residents took to the streets and picketed at the police station to express their dissatisfaction at what they believe to be below par service.

They marched to the Orlando East Police Station and the court on October 15 in a bid to show that the community has had enough. The marchers felt that the police and the court were undermining the lives of the citizens who they should be protecting.

Member of the Gauteng Legislature, Ghana Makashule reminded the police that their duty was to protect the people from criminals and to serve the people which were the reasons they received a salary.

Eunice Mthembu called for the dismissal of incompetent police.

“We are not here to request for more police but we want people who are not corrupt,” said Makashule

He said they should do away with not investigating cases or not arresting criminals because they know them. He emphasised that they were not fighting with police, but demanded that they do their jobs.

Makashule said it was disgraceful that there were several cases including murders reported at the police station which are not taken seriously or investigated. Member of Parliament, Tsepo Mhlongo alleged that the police station  management team was disrespectful because the protesters once picketed for the very same reason and nothing was done.

“They didn’t even bother to respond to our memorandum or the demands of the people,” said Mhlongo.

He read out a list of cases which had never been to court, one of which included the murder of a young boy which he said had not seen the inside of a courtroom.

Mhlongo demanded the brigadier’s resignation and called for skilled and well-resourced policemen to be stationed there. Eunice Mthembu, a resident who was at the march recalled the case in which an 11-year-old was raped and said that the suspected rapist, who is also a parolee, had not been arrested to answer to the charge yet. She said they were escalating these and other cases to ensure that the investigating officers are relieved of their duties for failing to investigate cases of this nature.
