Join the fight to eradicate world hunger

"I know so many people who go to bed without eating a decent meal. Many children often go to school without a packed lunch and that makes it difficult to learn," said Moosa.

World Food Day (WFD) was founded by the United Nations’ (UN) Food and Agriculture Organization in 1945, and has been observed annually, every October 16, since 1981. WFD was established to increase awareness of world hunger, poverty and to inspire solutions for global change.

This year, McCain South Africa, a leading frozen food company treated Kliptown Secondary School learners in Eldorado Park Extension Nine to a cooked meal.

Caitlin Kleyn (16), Sihle Monaheng (17) and Teshia Africa, Grade 11 learners from Kliptown Secondary School.

Celebrity chef Mogau Seshoene, who is widely known as the Lazy Makoti, teamed up with McCain South Africa in hopes to provide awareness about the importance of WFD. Seshoene prepared potato chips, vegetable rice and a chicken stir fry for all the learners and educators at the school.

Kitso Tau (16) and Angela Mahome (16) enjoyed their McCain chips.

“I am extremely excited to be a part of this great initiative, I will be cooking for 2500 children and it warms my heart knowing that so many children were able to eat a nutritious meal today,” she said.

Bessie Moosa, a 15-year-old learner at the school said that everyone at the school was grateful that McCain chose their Kliptown Secondary School.

“I know so many people who go to bed without eating a decent meal. Many children often go to school without a packed lunch and that makes it difficult to learn,” said Moosa.

The UN hopes to eradicate world hunger by 2030 and believes the target is possible only if everyone is on board. McCain officials spoke to the learners and urged them not to waste food because poverty in the Greater Eldorado Park is still a matter of serious concern.
