‘Help keep our field clean,’ pleads Klipspruit West soccer team

Sport is a positive diversionary measure which, if used effectively, can save the lives of many youngsters who fall prey to the lure of drugs, sex and crime, too often.

According to  Basalona Juniors Klipspruit Academy FC coach and founder, Selwyn Chotia, the youth in the Klipspruit community are turning to drugs, alcohol and sex due to a serious lack of public recreational and sporting facilities in the area. He said that for the past four years, he has been trying to find an open veld that he can use when training his players.

“We are currently training in a small park in Klipspruit West but the children I work with lack motivation because they feel that they are not taken seriously enough, many have left the team and found themselves in situations that are difficult to get out of,” said Chotia.

Basalona FC, which is four years old, consists of children from different cultures, backgrounds and religions. “The children in our area love playing soccer, we have no many talented young people that are gifted but they cannot showcase their talents because we simply don’t have the facilities,”
“We used to train in the dip and after a while, the grass grew too long and hollows started forming in the ground. The park we are currently training at has so many holes, broken glass bottles and waste that is a safety concern for our children, I have tried cleaning up the area but because its not a proper soccer field people don’t respect it and treat it as such,” he added.

Jay-Jay Jacobs, who plays for the U13s, said that playing soccer makes him feel like he has a purpose but he fears playing sometimes because the field they are using is not safe. Chotia is appealing to councillors and residents to assist in keeping the grounds safe and clean.

“There are open velds that can be used but I need funding to cut the grass and maintain the area,” he said.
