How can we end the violence in our schools?

De Bruyn also said that parents needed to take responsibility for their children. "As a parent, one needs to search your child's bags and monitor their behaviour," he said.

In recent months, South Africans  have witnessed an alarming increase in incidents of violence in schools across the country.

Learners fighting amongst each other, teachers fighting with children and learners fighting and in some unfortunate cases killing their teachers. It has been said that teachers are beginning to fear to go to work because the children are out of control.

Reports show that many teachers are immigrating overseas in hope of a better life and a safer working environment. The Department of Education released statements on the violence at schools and said that they do not condone such behaviour from learners or educators.

There are many questions to ask: What are the solutions? Is having social workers at schools enough? How do we deal with such issues? To assist with the issue, police officers from the Sophiatown Police Station visited a school to ascertain just how serious the issue has become.

The search uncovered a host of dangerous weapons carried by learners.

On October 11, the police officers conducted a surprise school search at a high school in Bosmont. Grade 9 to Grade 11 learners were searched. According to communications officer, Jerbes de Bruyn, the police officers confiscated four packets of marijuana, three knives, two screwdrivers, cigarettes, condoms, lighters and matches.

The officers did not arrest any of the learners but gave them a stern verbal warning about having these items on their person and what the consequences were for those found to be in possession of what can only be described as contraband.

De Bruyn also said that parents needed to take responsibility for their children. “As a parent, one needs to search your child’s bags and monitor their behaviour,” he said.
