Parents and caregivers are more worried during school holidays

'We keep them off the streets during the holidays'.

Keeping children safe and off the street is an all-year priority but parents and caregivers are more worried during school holidays because in most cases, children are unsupervised due to parents needing to go to work.

Samantha Clark from the Eldorado Park Community Workers Programme (CWP) said that the need for child safety is dire and that everyone needs to take it seriously.

Clark, with the help of other CWP members organised a holiday programme designed to keep the children of the greater Eldorado Park busy and most importantly, off the streets.

The children played board games.

The programme was a one-day event, held at the Don Mateman Hall in Ext 6. Children were given the opportunity to participate in an aerobics session lead by aerobics instructor Promise Sibanyoni.

“Being able to work with these children today was such an honour. I love children because they are filled with so much energy, their futures are bright, I am glad I managed to promote a healthy lifestyle, I hope they remember what I taught them today,” said Sibanyoni.

After the aerobics fitness session, the children played board games and other games of their choice. Face painting was available to ensure all the children had fun.

A safety talk took place as well, here children were taught about important fire and safety rules. After all the fun and games, the children received a warm cooked meal prepared by Charmaine Breda, who said she always cooked at all CWP events.

After lunch, the children were given a party pack to enjoy. Clark said she was happy with how the day went.

“Next time I hope our Eldorado Park CWP can have the programme for more than one day and that more children will attend, we do this for them to enjoy themselves, we want to give back the community as much as we can,” said Clark. As the CWP we plan to host afternoon programmes in the coming weeks,” she added.
