Diepkloof Karateka spin kicks in Durban

She fought against a tough opponent in the finals, a karateka opponent that is ranked number one in that division in the country while Mmasechaba is ranked number five.

The Diepkloof Dynamite Karate Team star Mmasechaba Lechaba flew to Durban (Kwazulu Natal) to take part in the Karate South Africa Women’s Cup that was held in Tongaat Indoors Sport Centre.

The prestigious tournament that promotes women in general also encourages women to take part in sport, Sensei Thabo Molubi said, “I am glad to announce that our Durban trip was a huge success.”

All kata and kumite athletes were offered an opportunity to weigh in and also submit their indemnity forms. According to the programme of the day and the tournament bulletin that was distributed earlier to all instructors, only kata athletes were to compete on that particular day and all kumite divisions were to take part the following day.

Mmasechaba waited for her turn to compete the following day while the sensei was busy officiating as a referee for kata athletes.

Finally, when she was called to compete she came on board and performed as it was expected of her. She won her first round and moved to the semi-finals where she won her semi-finals round as well and booked her spot in the finals.

She fought against a tough opponent in the finals, a karateka opponent that is ranked number one in that division in the country while Mmasechaba is ranked number five.

Molubi said, “The final was so spectacular that both athletes fought fearlessly and both wanted to win the fight. Unfortunately, Mmasechaba lost on points and came second, winning a silver medal respectively.”

Molubi said that this was a big achievement for Mmasechaba and it will definitely improve her national rankings.

Molubi said, “All thanks to Resultant Finance for coming on board and making her dream to come true by competing in the Karate South Africa Women’s Cup and also sponsoring her trip to go down to Durban to compete in this prestigious tournament that promotes women of South Africa.”

Mmasechaba stands a good chance of being selected to compete in the upcoming Commonwealth Karate Championships that will be held in Durban later this year. Anyone who is interested in joining the team can get a hold of the sensei on 072 331 4268 or email thabomolubi30@gmail.com.
