Putting a uniquely African stamp on fashion

Franco Kamanga said, "The first time I met Knowledge Gumbi was Maboneng. I was fascinated by his ability to mix animal skin and African print cloth on his design shoes.

The perception that African clothing designs are limited to the designing of the traditional Sesheshwe dresses, t-shirts and trousers. Little did people think that one-day local creative artists would explore and expand their creativity by including African print on shoes, earrings, caps, hats and hoodies.

This unique fashion creativity inspired Franco Kamanga and Knowledge Gumby to form a formidable business partnership which will unleash the untested African talents on the industry.

Kamanga said, “The first time I met Knowledge Gumbi was Maboneng. I was fascinated by his ability to mix animal skin and African print cloth on his design shoes.

“He agreed to teach me how to design shoes and adding African print-not only on shoes-but also on hats, caps, earrings, t-shirts and a wide variety of designs,” said Kamanga.

Gumbi later introduced Kamanga to his family who is specialists in their craft and stretched his creativity and knowledge. That is where he was taught to design a shoe from scratch in the distinctive African style he has become known for.

“People can wear these designs any time of the year, not only during Heritage Month. They can also wear our designs with the wide range of fashion wear available at the market,” said Kamanga.

The designing duo showcases their clothing at various marketplaces in Rosebank, Jabulani Mall and next to the Soweto Theatre. The pair recently exhibited their designs at the Ndingiliza Experience Street Market show and to hear them say it, the crowds were thrilled.

“Our goal is to own a shop where people can access our unlimited range of clothing designs,” said Kamanga.

If the reception they have received at the street market, is anything to go buy, Mkamanga’s eye-catching designs are sure to cause a stir in the local fashion scene.
