Learners fight it out at the Battle of Melodies

Heavenly Voices.

Naledi High School students were in the limelight last week during a battle of melodies at the hall. Titled the Soweto Schools competition, the event that took place last Wednesday was one of a kind as there hasn’t been an initiative of this kind in the area.

Although starting small, the competition is aimed at having as many Soweto schools as possible competing in the clap and tap singing competition. Being the second time the event takes place, the idea behind the event is to create a unique platform where school choirs can compete against each other and create an environment where the musical art can grow.

“This is the second event of its kind and the first one was during the June holidays and the reason why we decided to have these events during school holidays is that we want to keep them away from mischief.

“Upon a regular basis, these students are used to having practise sessions during their spare time so we came up with the idea that how about we give them a sense of purpose even though it is during school holidays so that we are encouraging them to do what they love and what they are already doing.

“We are targeting to have one more event around November just after the students have finished writing their final examinations.

“We would also like to appeal for parental support and for parents to come and attend such events because that will encourage singers to be better at what they do,” said Tshidiso Souls, a representative of the organising committee of the competition.

Learners from Prudence Secondary.

The clap and tap schools competition included choirs from Thabo Secondary, Dr Vilakazi, Prudence Secondary, Naledi Secondary, Thomas Mofolo, Reutlwile Secondary and Thubelihle Secondary.

As Soweto is divided into clusters, the competition will be involving schools in other regions of Soweto to accompany the regions of Soweto they haven’t already covered.

The winning choirs of the competition received certificates and the competition is looking forward to growing enough from schools to benefit from the competition.
